The letter that change my life

In May of my senior year in high school, I was all set to go to Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie-Mellon), because it was all that I could afford. Then I received a letter from MIT saying, in effect, "Congratulations. You have won a full tuition scholarship. Please fill out the enclosed admission application form." That letter changed my life forever. In my teenage arrogance, it never occurred to me that some teacher, somewhere in my background, must have gone to bat for me. To this day, I don't know who it was.
