Step Dad.. "Mr. Denton"

Mr. Denton was a white man always rang up our groceries at the store. He was always real friendly to us and smiled at mom a lot. I was shootin' hoops in the empty lot when mom and Mr. Denton walked over to meet me. He grabbed the ball and challenged me to a game of P.I.G. I beat him, but I think he let me win.

Then they walked me across the street for ice cream and I knew something' was up. Mom told me they were getting' married, and he'd be my step-dad. I thought that was pretty cool. A white step-dad who worked at the grocery store was better than no dad at all.
