It was 8pm, and I was just about finished with my swing shift at the local sporting goods store. The rainy February night was drizzling outside the store windows, and I was more than ready to go home. I used to love working there, but that night I realized how stuck I was. I had been just a clerk for more then 2 years.
Feeling so depressed, I had not realized that the district manager had come in while I was sweeping up. When I finally made my way across the whole floor, and then back again, I noticed him leaning against the rear wall. He told me he was so surprised that I had stayed to clean up, even though I didn't have to, that he promoted me to manager of the store, right there on the spot.
