I was in college for four years, studying pre-law, and had already put in an application to go to graduate school, when I got the shock of my life. My girlfriend had tears in her eyes one day when I caught up with her on campus. She walked me over to a bench and struggled to find the words. When she told me she was pregnant, I nearly blacked out. But I was a man, so I told her I would put on hold my college plans for the time being to help her raise the child. Since both of us were practicing Catholics, no other option was possible. I just told myself I would go after a couple of years, but I think even then I suspected I'd never go to school again.
