We had opened all of our presents, and dad was on his way to get us from the city. I played with my new toys glancing out the window frequently. I didn't want mom to feel sad, so I was trying to hide my excitement. When lunchtime rolled around, we were getting tired of waiting, and my sisters started to whine. Mom assured us he was just running late, and we watched It's a Wonderful Life with her.
When dinnertime came around, Mom's hope was starting to fade also. We ate in silence, and the girls went to their rooms to wait. I helped with the dishes then parked in front of the window to wait for the headlights to appear. I pretended to be sleeping as she lifted me from the windowsill and carried me to bed, a disgruntled sigh escaping her lips.
