Birth Defects

How could they have birth defects? I have never smoked, and I didn't drink. It was bad enough that I was most likely going to have to give birth without my husband, and now I was looking at dealing with two not so healthy babies. The doctor explained that the birth defect meant that one twin would always be bigger than the other, and there was a slight chance that on of the would be dwarfed.
